In this post, I’m going to show you how I made this little birdie wall art for my dining room under $5. Super quick, easy and cute!
I recently saw the above picture online (can’t remember where). If you know who it belongs to, please let me know so I can credit them. But I just fell in love with the simple design and monochromatic theme of this living room. What particularly caught my attention were those birdies chilling on the wall. Aren’t they just the cutest?!
I really liked the idea of hanging something similar on the blank wall I have in my dining room and this is what I came up with:
But I had no idea where to buy it so I googled some randomness along the lines of “minimalist bird wall art string.” Nothing useful came up. Then I thought – you know what? This can’t be so hard to make! So that’s what I did and I’m so happy with how it turned out.
If you want to make this wall-art or something similar, here is all you need:
- Black construction paper- $1.50 at Dollarama
- Some kind of a thin light-weight black cord – $7 at Michael’s
- Scissors
- A template. I printed mine from http://www.clipartqueen.com/
- Scotch tape
- a pencil (not pictured!)
You can probably tell where I’m going with this. It’s so easy! I took the cord and taped it exactly where I wanted it to be on the wall, keeping a slight curve in the middle:
I then cut out my template birdie, and traced it on to the black construction paper and cut it out. Once I had my first birdie, I used it to cut 11 more:
I feel like the birds could’ve been smaller. But when I was cutting I thought I would make them big for now and could always cut them smaller if needed. For now they’re staying big because I have no patience to cut them all smaller lol. Anyhow, one by one, I placed them on the cord, taping them from the inside / back side. I made sure there was good distance between them – not too much and not too little:

So there you have it, folks! How easy was that?! This project cost me $8.50, but truly it cost me like $2 (because I still have 195ft left over from the 200ft of the black cord lol! and that was the most expensive part!) Here is the final look before-after:
Now, you can also hammer two nails on either side of the wall and then tie the cord to them. That would definitely be more sturdy than tape. I’m just keeping this up with tape for now because I have to think 10 times before hammering a nail into the wall 😀 I’ll do it sooner or later if I decide to stick with this wall art in this space. I like how I can easily remove two pieces of tape from either side of the cord and move it completely to another space. In the meantime, if anything falls off, I’ll just be taping it back! 🙂
My daughter was really happy to see so many birds on the wall so this project is a win!
